WHAT IS UNIVERSAL HEALTH COVERAGE?

with No Comments

Universal health coverage (UHC) ensures all people, everywhere, can access the quality health services they need without suffering financial hardship. It is a fundamentally political goal rooted in the human right to health. It is also one of the smartest investments any country can make.

Why Universal Health Coverage?

Health is a human right, not a privilege.
Access to quality health services should never depend on your race, gender, age, ability, wealth or citizenship. UHC leaves no one behind.

No one should go bankrupt when they get sick.

All people should be able to get the health care they need without being pushed into poverty or giving up other life necessities to pay for it.

Good health transforms societies.

When people are healthy, families, communities and economies can reach their full potential.

UHC is possible.

100+ low- & middle-income countries, home to 3/4 of the world’s population, have taken steps toward UHC.

Health for All is critical to the future we want by 2030.

Achieving UHC will accelerate efforts to end extreme poverty, reduce burdens of infectious and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), promote economic growth and job creation, achieve gender equality and realize all of our Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Today 12-12-2018 is Universal Health Coverage Day

The South African NCD Alliance and its partners and allies support UHC. Our government’s version is called National Health Insurance (NHI).

The people we serve want equitable access to quality care that won’t bankrupt them- that is UHC. We support the 5 pillars of UHC and want to be an active part of the solution.

  • Ensuring political commitment and multi-stakeholder action
  • Leaving no one behind by reaching every person and community with comprehensive, quality health services
  • Engaging community voices to ensure that all are represented
  • Investing more and smarter by mobilizing resources equitably and efficiently
  • Holding leaders accountable by improving monitoring and feedback mechanisms
